Congratulations (Prof.) Dr. Tanuja Srivastava for receiving the Patent Certificate for an invention entitled “A NOVEL CATALYST FOR HYDROGENOLYSIS OF SUCROSE TO GLYCEROL AND METHOD OF PREPRATION”.
The present invention discloses the hydrogenolysis of sucrose with an aim of obtaining milder reaction conditions and simultaneously maximizing yield of glycerol, the most expensive polyol among those obtained during the reaction. Polyalcohols have wide industrial applications and the majority of polyols are currently produced from petroleum fractions, but with the present concern that petroleum is a non-renewable resource, there is an increasing desire for an alternate method of production. Agricultural manufacturing industries are continuously burdened with by-products that have no immediate economical value. Several of these by-products can be converted into sugars and then be used in the production of polyols. The use of catalysts can lower production costs and improve the economic viability of processes. The present invention describes the effective production of glycerol was achieved via sucrose hydrogenolysis using novel catalyst in aqueous solution under hydrogen gas atmosphere 50 atm. The process does not only describe the use of catalyst to obtain value-added chemicals and fuels but also helps to solve the global issues such as greenhouse effect and the shortage of energy by the rational utilization of biomass resources. Dr. Tanuja Srivastava has four research projects, more than 100 National and International reputed Journals, education excellence award winner, campus Director from last 22 years and this work content owned, updated and maintained by intellectual property of India, the Patent Office Government of India.
